Overview

What this programme is

Youth Skills Development trains young people in trades the local economy is actually short of — solar installation, tailoring, welding, catering and phone repair — rather than in whatever is easiest to teach.

Every cohort finishes with a certificate, a starter toolkit, and structured help finding either employment or a first set of customers. We measure the programme by how many are still working a year later.

What you receive

  • Six months of trainingHands-on instruction from working tradespeople, four days a week.
  • A starter toolkitThe equipment needed to begin work, kept by the graduate.
  • Placement supportIntroductions to local employers, or help registering a small business.

Eligibility

Who can apply

These are the criteria we check. They are the same rules the portal uses when it tells you whether you are eligible — there is only one set of them.

  • You live in Olokoro or a neighbouring community in Umuahia South, Umuahia North or Ikwuano.

  • You are between 18 and 35 years old.

  • You are currently unemployed or working less than you would like to.

If you do not meet a criterion you can still apply, but your application is likely to be unsuccessful. Sign in and complete your profile to see where you stand before you start.
